Listed below are some key reasons why we would like you to consider BaySail. Please also see our page titled, Frequently Asked School Questions.

ASA CERTIFICATION - BaySail offers a full range of American Sailing Association (ASA) courses and has earned the ASA Gold Standard Rating. ASA provides a stepped approach to learning to sail -- as you take courses you gain skills and become certified to skipper different sized boats. ASA certification is recognized worldwide by sailing professionals and yacht charter companies and it ensures that our school complies with a comprehensive program.

SMALL CLASS SIZE - SailTime Members are limited only two students per boat and BaySail classes are limited to four students affording plenty of personal attention. Our instructors are mature, experienced and qualified. They love their jobs and it shows!

FIRST CLASS BOATS - BaySail uses new or recent model sailboats that are chosen to give you the best possible sailing experience. All BaySail boats are fully equipped, impeccably maintained and sparkling clean (you could eat off our decks!). After completing your course, you can practice your newly acquired skills on a variety of daysailers and yachts that are available for rent/charter from BaySail at a discounted rate for graduates. Please see our website for photos.

LOCATED ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY - Located just off I-95 in the historic town of Havre de Grace, only 45 minutes from Baltimore and an hour from Philadelphia, BaySail offers an ideal venue for a variety of sailing instruction. The Havre de Grace harbor features protected waters for beginner courses while the greater Chesapeake Bay ensures challenges for more experienced students. Free shuttle from train station is available.

BASIC SAILING COURSE - ( ASA 101 ) During this three-day course, you will receive instruction in such basic skills as preparation of the boat, rigging, hoisting and setting sails; Rules of the Road; and Points of Sail. (This is also a US Coast Guard approved Safe Boating Course). You'll enjoy seven hours a day on the water and get plenty of hands-on training including open water sailing, docking, anchoring and much more. Each day will begin at 9 AM and end around 4:30 or 5 PM. We'll take a break for lunch and students can either bring their own lunch or dine at one of several excellent restaurants within walking distance of the marina. There are also several charming Bed & Breakfasts and hotels close by if you need overnight accommodations (see Location and Directions page). In this course, we use Capri 22's?s which are very responsive, stable and easy to sail. The Capri features a large cockpit with plenty of legroom and a cabin below decks to stow gear. It's always best to learn the basics of sailing on a boat like the Capri 22 because it is not intimidating and gives students a much better feel for the wind than a large charter boat. Upon graduation you will receive ASA certification and you will be ready to safely and confidently skipper boats in the 20 ft. range. You will also receive 15% off your first boat rental so that you can practice your new skills.

BASIC COASTAL CRUISING (Learn to Charter Course) - ( ASA 103 ) After completing this three-day course you will receive ASA certification enabling you to "cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions." Our practical hands-on instruction will show you safety requirements, maneuvering in and out of marina slips and along docks, basic navigation and much more. You will have the option of living aboard during this course. Each morning your instructor will join you for a full day of sailing and learning and each evening you will return to the marina... your instructor will depart and you will be free to enjoy living aboard if you like. Yachts used are in the 30 to 34 feet range. Prerequisite: ASA 101. (Arrangements can be made for experienced sailors to test out for ASA 101). Click here for a class schedule.

BAREBOAT CHARTERING CERTIFICATION COURSE - ( ASA 104 ) An advanced course designed to give individuals with cruising experience a greater understanding of boat systems, maintenance procedures and navigation. After completing this course you will receive ASA bareboat certification enabling you to "act as skipper or crew of a 30 - 50 ft. boat sailing by day in coastal waters." You and your instructor and crew will live aboard your sloop and cruise the Bay for three days practicing your newly acquired sailing skills. Two nights will be spent at anchor enjoying the quiet beauty of the Bay. Yachts used are in the 36 to 40 ft. range. Prerequisite: ASA 101 and 103. Click here for a class schedule.

FIVE-DAY COMBO COURSE (ASA 103 & ASA 104) This course combines Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) and Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104) as described above in an intense five-day program. After completing this course you will receive ASA certification enabling you to ?act as skipper or crew of a 30 - 50 ft. boat sailing by day in coastal waters.? You and your instructor and crew will live aboard your chartered sloop learning many new skills and cruising the bay for five days. Yachts used are in the 36 to 40 ft. range. Prerequisite: ASA 101. Click here for a class schedule.
