 Experience the Lake Ontario 300

Check out these great photos from the 2011 Lake Ontario 300 aboard Never Say Never. Courtesy of Rob Sampson.

Never Say Never participated with Oasis and Bow Movement in this long distance race this year. Bow Movement driven by SailTime member David Medhurst finished 3rd in the Double Handed White Sail division behind a Dufour 36 and a Sabre 402.

Congratulations to everyone that completed this gruelling race!

In cooperation with Discover Boating, Pat Foran of CTV's Consumer Alert, visited the SailTime base at Port Credit Yacht Club to investigate the benefits of fractional boating.  Pat interviewed a few SailTime GTA members, toured our Cruisers Yacht 360 Express power boat, and even took the helm of one of our Hunter 36 sailboats.

SailTime GTA Training Program

Our Specialty is Training for Cruising on Large, Fully Equipped Vessels

Whether you’re a novice or experienced boater, the learning never stops.  It’s one of the things you as a passionate boater enjoy.  At SailTime GTA, we want to help you achieve your cruising dreams on a large well equipped yacht with a comprehensive series of credentials and training.

Our courses are offered in 3 convenient GTA locations:  Downtown Toronto, Port Credit and Oakville.

SailTime GTA Credential Requirements

The following 4 courses are the minimum requirements to operate a SailTime vessel. These courses form the basis for competently operating a keel boat in the waters of Lake Ontario.  The courses are open to anyone – both for SailTime Members and non-Members with the exception of our member-only power yacht training.

However, to operate a vessel in our local waterways requires a set of three licences.  Individual pricing is below, or save $40 and take all three licences for $200.

Pleasure Craft Operator Card

Transport Canada requires all boat operators to obtain and carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card to enforce a basic level of boating safety knowledge required for safe recreational boating.

Format: Self-study.  Write exam at a convenient time.

Price:  $50

Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime)

Anyone operating a marine radio onboard Canadian vessels, must hold a Radio Operator's Certificate (ROC-M), also known as VHF Marine Operators License.  While mandatory for all SailTime GTA members, ROC-M is also highly recommended for first-mates and frequent crew to ensure proper use of routine and emergency radio operation.

Format: Self-study.  Write exam at a convenient time.

Price:  $120

Toronto Port Authority Power Vessel Operator's Permit

The Toronto Port Authority has jurisdiction over the navigational waters from Victoria Park Avenue (Scarborough West) to Humber River (Etobicoke East), a significant portion of SailTime GTA cruising grounds.  Anyone operating a power vessel in these waters is required to hold a Power Vessel Operator's Permit, also known as a Toronto Harbour Licence.  For SailTime GTA members with a home port of Bronte this permit is not mandatory but recommended.

Format: Self-study.  Write exam at a convenient time.

Price:  $95

Canadian Yachting Basic Cruising Standard PLUS

(Sail Memberships Only)

All members on SailTime GTA sailing vessels must have Basic Cruising Standard from the Canadian Yachting Association which covers the skills required to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of up to 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

Our CYA Basic Cruising Standard PLUS training course will exceed this through further training on our fleet specific systems, electronics and local navigation.  You will be taught on SailTime GTA's fully loaded Hunter 33 & Hunter 36 in your local harbour. Should you be an experienced sailor without official accreditation, we also offer a challenge course consisting of a written test and sea trial to obtain your CYA Basic Cruising certificate.

Meet our Instructors

Dave Hill is a CYA Instructor with 35 years of sailing experience under his keel.  He started sailing dinghy’s at age 12 at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club and now enjoys sailing & racing keelboats.

Dave became a cruising instructor in 2006 so that he could share his passion for sailing.  Dave is leading a SailTime flotilla to the British Virgin Islands this fall that is sure to be a memorable trip.

A pilot by profession since 18 years of age, Greg Marlo started sailing on yachts 15 years ago.   Since joining the SailTime program in 2007, he has logged hundreds of hours on sail and power boats up to 65’ on Lake Ontario and the Caribbean.

Much of marine proficiency parallels aviation such as navigation, meteorology, and dealing with winds.  With this experience and his passion for being on the water, the transition was easy and enjoyable.

Greg finds coaching and training others rewarding, so they too can best enjoy the boating lifestyle.

Your Membership bookings are managed on the SailTime Scheduler. It’s an online calendar that lets you make reservations for today, tomorrow, next week or up to a year in advance.  Our sophisticated software manages bookings and shares access for all the SailTime Members on their chosen boat to ensure everyone enjoys their boat time every month.

The SailTime Scheduler day is broken into 2 time slots, or as we call them, “SailTimes”.  In the Greater Toronto Area, our morning SailTimes run from 10:30am – 6pm and our evening SailTimes run overnight from 6pm – 10:30am.
